CNN —The 2024 Paris Olympics are creeping ever closer and for female US gymnasts, including global superstar Simone Biles, the Core Hydration Classic on Saturday represents the first step towards qualifying for the Summer Games. CNN —Simone Biles has revealed that she thought “the world is going to hate me” after withdrawing from the gymnastics team event at the Tokyo Olympics. “If I could have got on a plane and flown home, I would have done it,” Biles said. During last year’s world championships, Biles won four gold medals – in the team, all-around, beam and floor competitions – as well as a silver in the vault. The 27-year-old could add to her medal haul at this year’s Olympics in Paris, which begin on July 26. “Your body is going to try to do something, and your mind is like, ‘No, you’re not doing this, you’re going to open out, you’re going to do this’ … You’ve been doing something for so long and you now no longer have control.”

The most successful gymnast of her time had shown her fallibility on the biggest stage of all, and as she completed a history-making comeback at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships last week, she completed refashioning those expectations of success. Records as well as medals announced Biles’ return to the pinnacle of the sport in Antwerp, Belgium. Five months ago, Biles didn’t think she’d ever compete again, she said on X, formerly known as Twitter. Nevertheless, ghosts from Tokyo still lingered at the world championships, she said afterwards, memories bubbling to the surface and making her “nervous” for the team finals on Wednesday. CNN —A day after winning a sixth all-around title to become the most decorated gymnast in history, Simone Biles added to her extraordinary medal collection with a silver in the vault at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Saturday. Needing to regain her composure immediately for her second vault, Biles went on to score an impressive 14.666 for an average score of 14.549. Kaylia Nemour of Algeria won silver, while the USA’s Shilese Jones took bronze. On Friday, Biles surpassed Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo’s record of 33 overall medals across both the Olympics and the world championships with a record sixth all-around gold. Biles has now earned 28 career medals (21 gold, four silver, three bronze) at the world championships, which is an all-time record.

Biles, who won her first all-around world title as a 16-year-old in Antwerp a decade ago, has claimed a total of 27 world medals -- including 21 golds -- having also led the U.S. women's team to a seventh consecutive title on Wednesday. She has also surpassed Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo's record of 33 medals in total at the Olympics and world championships. I don't think it will hit me until maybe I retire and then look back and see everything that I've done," added Biles. Former world champion, Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, was second with a total of 56.766 after a superb floor routine. Biles is set to compete in the vault and uneven bars finals on Saturday before beam and floor exercise finals on Sunday.
